Children's Liturgy of the Word is available at the 9:30 a.m. Masses in both the church and chapel. This important ministry invites children to participate in Sunday worship and hear a reflection at an age appropriate level.
Children, ages 4-8 are invited to attend. Children's Liturgy of the Word is considered "church" and even though the children are dismissed from the larger congregation for the Liturgy of the Word, we still provide sacred space for them to worship together with their peers. The children learn how to walk in a procession, sit quietly to listen to the Gospel story, prayerfully reflect on God's holy word with the adult leader, and then offer their own prayers of the faithful. They then process back into church to sit with their family for the rest of the Mass.
Process during Mass
After the opening prayer at Mass, the Presider will invite the children to the front. Children process from Mass with folded hands and meet in 1E (the large room in the Clement Ministry Center) for listening to the Word, hearing a reflection, and praying and singing. (Parents are welcome to attend with their children.)
Seating Tips: Try to sit in the same area from week to week so that your child knows where to find you when returning to Mass.
Returning to Mass: Please speak to your child about the need to be reverent during Mass. We ask the children to walk slowly, have their hands folded, and to re-enter the Mass quietly.
The leaders for the Liturgy of the Word for children receive special training and ongoing resources. Each weekend we have two adult leaders and one musician who prepares for this special ministry with children. We have a team of volunteers, so most leaders make a commitment to one Sunday ever 4-6 weeks.
Each Liturgy of the Word leader must complete the Protecting All God's Children protocol prior to working with the children.
Children's Liturgy of the Word is offered most Sundays, except for some weeks during the summer and for most major holidays.
