Sometimes biblical geography adds important layers to our understanding. Jericho is one of the lowest physical points on earth, let alone the Holy Land. Close to the salty Dead Sea it is almost 900 ft below sea level. For context, the lowest point in North America is only 280 ft. below sea level. Jerusalem, where Jesus is heading, is about 2500 ft above sea level. Bartimaeus, the blind man, is sitting on the outskirts of this low point, sitting apart from the crowd, being shouted down; told that his worries don’t matter. He is literally and spiritually at a low point.
