2026/03/01 SCRIPTURE REFLECTION
Second Sunday of Lent
- Mary Kate Boyle, Coordinator of Campus & Youth Ministry
In the Gospel reading for this weekend, we hear the account of the Transfiguration, where Jesus’ divinity is confirmed. In front of Peter, James, and John, Jesus’ identity as the Son of God is fully revealed, fulfilling the Law and the Prophets. As the disciples stand there, in awe, a voice comes down from Heaven saying: “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to Him.”
These powerful words serve as a poignant reminder for us as we continue on our Lenten journey. During this time of intentional prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, we are ultimately called to draw nearer to Jesus and be attentive to His voice. God the Father not only proclaims His love for His Son, but also commands us to listen to Him—to trust Him, follow Him, and allow His words to guide our lives.
Paul emphasizes this message to Timothy, which we hear in our second reading today. In his letter, Paul encourages Timothy to "bear [his] hardship of the Gospel with the strength that comes from God" and reminds Timothy that Jesus saved us, so that we may live holy lives. This is not always easy, as we are often reminded in Scripture, but we are ultimately given the strength to do this through Christ.
Each of us was created with a purpose. There never has been, and never will be, someone quite like you. With that, we are all called to be God’s expression of goodness in the world, which is unique to who we are. As we continue this journey towards Holy Week, let us pay attention to Christ’s gentle movements, His words in scripture, and the ways He is calling us to place our hope and trust in His promises.
