Third Sunday of Easter

- Zach Melton, Manager of Media & Ministry Engagement

This week’s readings center on God’s faithfulness and his promise being fulfilled through Jesus.

In Acts 2:14, 22-33, Peter tells us how Jesus’ death and Resurrection fulfill the prophecy that someone from the line of King David would become the Son of God and King of the world. It reminds us that God always keeps his promises, even when people don’t fully understand His plan in the moment.

That message continues in Psalm 16. Like David, we can trust that God is always working in our lives, even in ways we don’t understand. In moments of uncertainty, we’re invited to rest in trust and find comfort in his promises to us.

In the second reading, 1 Peter 1:17-21, Peter reflects on Jesus as the perfect sacrifice, raised by God into glory. While this passage is hard for me to understand and difficult to fully grasp, it points to the depth and mystery of what Jesus has done for us.

The Gospel, Luke 24:13-35, ties everything together in such a personal way. Two disciples encounter Jesus on the road after the Resurrection, but they don’t recognize Him at first. He walks with them, explains the Scriptures, and stays with them all day. It isn’t until He breaks the bread that they realize it’s Him.  They say, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he spoke to us on the way and opened the Scriptures to us?”

This is a reminder of God’s promise to us. Even in uncertain times, like the two disciples who walked with Jesus without realizing it, He is with us. Even when we don’t feel Him or recognize Him, He is present, guiding us, teaching us, and giving us everything we need to grow His kingdom.

Jesus is walking with us, whether we see it or not, and He will carry us through. Amen.
