The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity

- Victor Lara, Manager of Discipleship & Engagement

Growing up, I often saw God as a distant being in the clouds, watching over us and keeping us safe. Much of my understanding of God the Father rested on the idea that He is our Creator, our Father, and the One who gave us His Son, Jesus Christ.

I would recite Our Father when prompted, but I did not always pay close attention to what I was truly saying. As I approached my First Holy Communion as a teenager, I briefly began to discover my relationship with Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. However, because of the noise, distractions, and bright lights of the world around me, I eventually lost my way and abandoned God.

I became fixated on wanting to do everything myself. I forgot that one of the most important relationships I needed was with the Holy Spirit, the Advocate. The same Spirit who has lived within me since the moment the baptismal water touched my forehead and freed me from Original Sin.

The way I have come to understand the Holy Trinity is through this simple truth:

God the Father made me.
God the Son loves me.
God the Holy Spirit guides me.

Each time I begin a prayer with the Sign of the Cross, I am reminded of the Holy Trinity and of Jesus’ Crucifixion and Resurrection. It is a daily reminder of the care God the Father has for His creation. It is a daily reminder of the mercy God the Son has for His lost sheep. It is a daily reminder of the wisdom God the Holy Spirit gives to humanity.

God the Father is the fountain of truth.
God the Son is the beacon of light.
God the Holy Spirit is the path toward a holier life.

“En el nombre del Padre, y del Hijo, y del Espíritu Santo. Amén.”

As my light was reignited by God, I came to realize that God, truly present and truly alive, had always been by my side. Now, when I pray, I acknowledge God the Father for the breath in my lungs, the movement of my body, and the beat of my heart.

I acknowledge God the Son for the voice of truth within me and around me, for the loving works performed through my body, and for the tenderness He places in my heart.

I acknowledge God the Holy Spirit for guiding my voice so others may hear the Good News, for inspiring my works so others may encounter the Good News, and for giving me the courage to share the love of God so that others may be brought closer to Him.

This Sunday, on the Feast of the Most Holy Trinity, we celebrate the mystery of one God in three Persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We celebrate a God who is not distant, but nearby. A God who creates, redeems, and sanctifies. A God who invites us into communion with Him and with one another.

So today, I pray:

Father, your son is here.
Lord Jesus, your servant is here.
Holy Spirit, your friend is here.
Amen.
