To scrutinize is to take a closer look. Following the Rite of Election, those preparing for baptism, confirmation and eucharist (the elect), now enter into a more Intense preparation of heart and spirit, which has the character of recollection rather than catechesis. These weeks offer an opportunity to purify heart and mind by examination of conscience and penitence, assisted by the prayers and intercessions of the community of the Church.
The entire parish community of Saint Clement, including those candidates who are already baptized, share a common goal with the elect: a deeper knowledge and intimacy with Jesus, our Savior. This intimacy is nourished through prayer, liturgy, participation in the life of the community and reflection on Scripture.
This Sunday, August 10, the elect will gather at the 11:15 am Mass for the First Scrutiny. Following the homily, they are called forward and the rite begins with silent prayer, followed by intercessions and a prayer of exorcism, which encourages the elect to acknowledge the true source of life, the gentle yoke of Jesus, who protects us from the dangerous influences of evil. As the prayer to Christ concludes: “In the power of the Holy Spirit, convert their hearts, that they may come to know your Father in sincere faith, which expresses itself in charity.”
Following dismissal, the elect and those candidates who walk alongside them, adjourn to reflect on the gospel of the day.
Our fall cohort of those wishing to be baptized, baptized Christians seeking to join the Catholic Church and baptized Catholics seeking Confirmation and/or Communion will begin on Monday, November 17, 2025. You are encouraged to sign up for Alpha which begins in September and/or take part in our upcoming Beta and spirituality courses.
